Biography of Nani A. Palkhivala

The Trust had commissioned the well-known writer Mr. M.V. Kamath to write the biography of Nani Palkhivala. The book entitled “Nani A. Palkhivala – A Life”, published by Hay House, was released in 2007. Copies of the book have been sent to more than 600 law colleges, public libraries and others.

“A Judiciary Made to Measure” by N.A. Palkhivala:

The late N.A. Palkhivala had in 1973 edited and published the above book. Thanks to support received from Mr. Syamal Gupta, Director, Tata Sons Ltd, the Trust reprinted 3000 copies of the book for free distribution.

“Nani Palkhivala – The Courtroom Genius” by Soli Sorabjee & Arvind Datar:

This book was released by Mr. Justice S.H. Kapadia, Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, on 14th January 2012, on the occasion of the 9th Nani Palkhivala Memorial Lecture delivered by him in Mumbai. The first copy was presented to Mr. B.A. Palkhivala at the function.

“The Wit and Wisdom of Nani Palkhivala”

Mr. Jignesh R. Shah, Advocate, had compiled an excellent collection of quotations on different subjects from Nani Palkhivala’s writings and speeches. He had received immense support and guidance from Mr. B.A. Palkhivala in doing so. At the behest of the Trust Rupa & Co published the compilatioin in the form of a book. The book, with an Introduction by Mr. Y.H. Malegam and Foreword by Mr. B.A. Palkhivala, was released at the hands of Mrt. Justice Santosh Hegde (Retd.) in Mumbai on 1st September 2015. The first copy was presented to Mr. B.A. Palkhivala on the occasion.

Propagation of Right To Information Act, 2006:

Since May 2007 the Trust, through Mahiti Adhikar Manch, Mumbai, has been propagating the RTI Act for the benefit of citizens.

Other activities:

i. The Trust has arranged, with local support, public meetings in Indore,
Jodhpur, Jaipur, Panjim, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Mangalore.

ii. The Trust awards merit scholarships to deserving law students in the
following Universities/College:

a) West Bengal Institute of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata.
b) NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad.
c) National Law School, Bengaluru.
d) Symbiosis International University, Pune.
e) Karnataka State Law University, Hubli.

iii. With the help of Symbiosis Law School, the book “Constitution Defaced and
Defiled” by N.A. Palkhivala has been updated with various amendments to the
Constitution since the book was first published in 1973.

On a suggestion made by Mr. Ashok Desai, Senior Advocate, New Delhi, the Jindal Law School, Sonepat, Haryana, have agreed to write commentary on the
amendments, under the supervision of Mr. Desai. Once this is ready, it is proposed to republish the book. In the first part of the book the original text by Nani Palkhivala will be retained in full, while in the second part the updated version with the commentary will appear.

iv. The Trust has initiated a series of Lectures at IIMs and IITs to be delivered by
eminent personalities for the benefit of students in these institutions. So far far ten Lectures have been delivered in the series. Those who have delivered these lectures so far are: Dr. Indira Rajaraman (at IIM, Visakhapatnam), Dr. Subir Gokarn, Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan (at IIM, Ahmedabad), Mrs. Shikha Sharma (at IIM, Bangalore), Mr. Uday Kotak (in Mumbai), Mr. Keki Mistry, Mrs. Usha Thorat (at IIM, Indore), Mr. Arvind P. Datar (at IIM, Kozhicode), Dr. R.A. Mashelkar and Mr. Kiran Karnik (at IIT, Gandhinagar).
